Bringing History to Life: Our Visit to the Imperial War Museum

Our year group had a fascinating and thought-provoking visit to the Imperial War Museum, where pupils deepened their learning about the First and Second World Wars. A highlight of the day was a special workshop with Jess, who was born shortly after the Second World War, and Dave, who served in the Army. Pupils were captivated by their personal stories and experiences and asked some amazing, thoughtful questions. The workshop encouraged everyone to reflect on the impact of conflict on individuals, families and communities. By the end, our pupils reached a powerful shared conclusion: war brings suffering and peace is something we should all value and protect. It was a memorable experience that brought their classroom learning to life.

Building Vocabulary for Our Newspaper Report

In English, pupils have been busy developing and extending their vocabulary in preparation for writing a newspaper report about the Blitz. They explored a range of new and powerful words and discussed their meanings, thinking carefully about how they could use them effectively in their own writing. To make the learning more memorable and enjoyable, pupils worked together to act out each word while the rest of the class tried to guess what it was. This created lots of lively discussion and encouraged everyone to think carefully about the meaning of each word and the context in which it might be used. Pupils thoroughly enjoyed the challenge and are now looking forward to putting their new vocabulary into practice when they write their newspaper reports.

Goals and Ambitions

Year 6 pupils enjoyed discussing their goals and ambitions for the future. They shared what they would like to achieve and talked about the different careers they may wish to pursue when they grow up. Pupils also explored the steps they can take to achieve their goals, including working hard, developing new skills, staying positive and not giving up when things become challenging. It was wonderful to see them thinking confidently about their futures and encouraging one another to aim high.

PE – Developing Our Hockey Skills

Year 6 pupils have been thoroughly enjoying their PE lessons as they develop their hockey skills. The children have been working together to practise controlling and passing the ball, dribbling with accuracy and moving effectively around the pitch. They have also enjoyed taking part in small team games, where they have been able to put their skills into practice. It has been wonderful to see pupils communicating with one another, encouraging their teammates and demonstrating excellent teamwork and sportsmanship. The sessions have been energetic, enjoyable and a fantastic opportunity for pupils to develop their confidence, coordination and physical fitness while having fun together.

Mastering Long Division

During our Year 6 Maths lessons, pupils have been working incredibly hard to develop their understanding of long division. The children showed determination and resilience as they worked carefully through each stage of the method, remembering the importance of completing the steps in the correct order and checking their calculations along the way.

It was wonderful to see pupils supporting one another with their learning. Some children confidently came to the front of the class to model long division and clearly explain each step to their classmates, using appropriate mathematical vocabulary and explaining their thinking as they worked through the calculation.

The children demonstrated a positive attitude when faced with challenging calculations and showed that perseverance, careful thinking and learning from mistakes can help them become confident and successful mathematicians.

Year 6 Science – Becoming Botanists: Exploring Taxonomy and Classifying Plants

During our Year 6 Science lesson, pupils became botanists as they explored the fascinating world of taxonomy and plant classification. The children learnt how scientists observe the characteristics of plants and use similarities and differences to classify them into different groups.

Working collaboratively, pupils examined a variety of plants, discussing their features and deciding how they could be sorted and grouped using appropriate scientific criteria. They were encouraged to use accurate scientific vocabulary to explain and justify their decisions.

Following their group investigations, pupils stood in front of the class and presented their findings, explaining how they had classified the plants, the characteristics they had identified and the reasoning behind their choices. This gave the children an opportunity not only to develop their scientific knowledge and enquiry skills, but also to build confidence in speaking, presenting and communicating their scientific ideas clearly to others.

What a Wonderful Start!

Year 6 has started the year really well! They have settled into their new routines and have shown great focus and enthusiasm during their lessons. It has been wonderful to see them actively participating, sharing their ideas and challenging themselves in their learning.

They have demonstrated a positive attitude and are working hard to achieve their best. We are very proud of the way they have begun the year and look forward to seeing them continue to grow, learn and thrive!
