Year 5 Science – Investigating Friction

During our Year 5 Science lesson, pupils became scientists as they explored the fascinating world of forces, focusing on friction and how it affects the movement of objects. The children learnt that friction is a force that acts between two surfaces, slowing down or preventing movement.

Working collaboratively, pupils investigated a variety of surfaces to explore how different textures affect friction. They discovered that sandpaper had the roughest surface and created the greatest amount of friction, making it more difficult for objects to move across it. The children were encouraged to use appropriate scientific vocabulary to discuss their observations, compare their results and explain their findings.

 

History – The Battle of Bosworth: Bringing Tudor History to Life

During our Year 5 History lesson, pupils travelled back in time to explore the fascinating beginnings of the Tudor period. The children learnt about the Battle of Bosworth in 1485 and how Henry Tudor's victory over King Richard III marked the end of the Wars of the Roses and the beginning of the Tudor dynasty.

Using drama, pupils brought this significant historical event to life by acting out the Battle of Bosworth. Through role-play, the children explored the events leading up to the battle and developed a better understanding of the key historical figures involved and the importance of this turning point in English history.

 

 Fire Safety Workshop – Learning How to Stay Safe

During our fire safety workshop, Year 5 pupils explored the importance of fire safety and learnt about the essential measures to take in the event of a fire. The children discussed how to recognise potential dangers, respond appropriately in an emergency and keep themselves and others safe.

Using drama and role-play, pupils acted out different fire safety scenarios, putting their knowledge into practice and exploring the appropriate actions to take in an emergency. This interactive approach encouraged the children to think carefully about their decisions and develop a better understanding of the importance of remaining calm and following safety procedures.

The workshop provided pupils with valuable opportunities to develop their awareness of fire safety, strengthen their problem-solving skills and build confidence in responding to emergency situations. The children participated enthusiastically and demonstrated a positive attitude towards learning these important life skills
