At Addison Primary School, we are delighted to offer our Year 6 pupils the exciting opportunity to take part in a PGL residential trip to the Isle of Wight every October. This much-anticipated experience is one of the highlights of the school year, providing children with the chance to enjoy an unforgettable adventure, develop essential life skills and create lasting memories with their friends.
The residential takes place over four days, with pupils departing on Friday and returning on Monday. Taking place early in the academic year, the trip provides a fantastic opportunity for children to build confidence, strengthen friendships and develop a positive sense of teamwork as they begin their final year of primary school.
Throughout the residential, pupils are encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new experiences through a range of exciting outdoor activities and team challenges. These activities are designed to develop confidence, resilience, communication, problem-solving skills and cooperation.
Whether pupils are overcoming personal challenges, trying an unfamiliar activity or encouraging their friends to succeed, every experience provides an opportunity for growth and achievement.
We encourage all children to participate, challenge themselves and celebrate their successes, recognising that every pupil's achievements are unique. The emphasis is not simply on completing activities but on developing the courage to try, the determination to persevere and the confidence to believe in their own abilities.
One of the most valuable aspects of the PGL residential is the opportunity for pupils to develop greater independence and personal responsibility.
Spending time away from home encourages children to become more self-reliant as they organise their belongings, manage daily routines, prepare for activities and take responsibility for themselves.
The residential also provides opportunities for pupils to develop resilience and adaptability as they encounter new situations, overcome challenges and discover what they are capable of achieving.
By taking place in October, the trip helps establish these important qualities early in Year 6, allowing pupils to build upon them throughout the remainder of the academic year.
The October residential provides an excellent opportunity for pupils to strengthen relationships with their classmates and teachers at the beginning of Year 6. Through shared adventures, group activities and everyday experiences, children learn the importance of teamwork, communication, cooperation and mutual respect.
Pupils are encouraged to support one another, celebrate each other's achievements and recognise the importance of working together to overcome challenges. These shared experiences help create a strong sense of belonging and togetherness within the year group, establishing positive relationships that continue to develop throughout the school year.
The friendships, trust and teamwork built during the residential sessions contribute to a supportive and encouraging learning environment when pupils return to school.
At Addison Primary School, we believe that some of the most valuable learning experiences take place beyond the classroom. Our PGL residential provides children with opportunities to develop important personal, social and emotional skills through practical experiences and exciting challenges.
Pupils learn to communicate effectively, make decisions, solve problems, demonstrate leadership and show consideration for others. The trip also encourages children to demonstrate the values we promote within our school community, including respect, kindness, responsibility, perseverance and cooperation.
By participating in activities outside their usual learning environment, pupils discover new strengths, develop greater self-belief and gain a deeper understanding of what can be achieved through effort, determination and teamwork.
Alongside the educational and personal development opportunities, the PGL residential is also a wonderful chance for pupils to have fun, enjoy new experiences and create special memories. From the excitement of travelling to the Isle of Wight together to the shared adventures, laughter and celebrations throughout the weekend, the trip provides experiences that children will remember for years to come. For many pupils, it is their first experience of staying away from home with their school friends, making the residential an especially meaningful and memorable occasion.
Holding our Year 6 residential in October is particularly valuable, as it allows pupils to begin their final year of primary school with a strong sense of confidence, independence and belonging. The skills developed during the residential — including resilience, teamwork, responsibility and perseverance — continue to support pupils throughout Year 6, both academically and personally.
The experience also helps children prepare for the increasing responsibilities and expectations of Year 6 and, ultimately, their transition to secondary school.
At Addison Primary School, we are proud to offer this exciting residential opportunity to our Year 6 pupils. Our PGL trip to the Isle of Wight is much more than an adventure — it is an opportunity to grow in confidence, build lasting friendships, discover new abilities and make a positive start to an important year in their primary education.
