Year 6 SATs Week

Our Year 6 pupils are continuing to work incredibly hard as they complete their SATs this week, with just one more test to go. To help them relax and stay positive, the children enjoyed a special breakfast together with their friends before the exams. It was a lovely opportunity for everyone to chat, laugh and support one another during this important week. A wonderful highlight of the morning was Oscar entertaining everyone with his fantastic piano playing, which created a calm and cheerful atmosphere. We are very proud of all our Year 6 pupils for their determination, resilience and positive attitude throughout SATs week.

Year 6 SATs Preparation

Year 6 pupils have been working extremely hard as they prepare for their upcoming SATs. They have shown great determination and focus in lessons, practising key skills in reading, writing, and maths. The pupils have been revising important topics, completing practice papers, and building their confidence each day. Teachers are proud of their positive attitude, resilience, and commitment to doing their very best.

Developing Skills Through Tennis

Year 6 pupils have been bringing energy and enthusiasm to their tennis lessons while developing a wide range of sporting skills. Children practised serving, rallying and controlling the ball with increasing accuracy and confidence. They learnt how to use forehand and backhand techniques, apply match tactics and work effectively as part of a team. Exciting games and challenges helped pupils improve their coordination, balance, agility and quick decision-making skills. Throughout the lessons, children demonstrated excellent sportsmanship by encouraging and supporting one another during friendly competitions. These engaging tennis sessions not only promoted a healthy and active lifestyle but also helped pupils build confidence, resilience and determination both on and off the court.

Creating and Presenting PowerPoints in Year 6

In Year 6, children learn how to create engaging PowerPoint presentations to share their ideas and research with others. Pupils develop their digital skills by adding text, images, animations and transitions to make their presentations interesting and informative. They learn how to organise information clearly and choose designs that suit their topic. After completing their presentations, children confidently present their work to the class, improving their speaking and communication skills. Presenting to an audience helps pupils build confidence and learn how to explain their ideas clearly. These activities encourage creativity, teamwork and independence while preparing children for future learning.

Maths in Year 6 – Metric Measures

In Year 6 Maths, pupils have been learning about metric measures and how to convert between different units of measurement. Children explored measurements such as millimetres, centimetres, metres, grams, kilograms and litres. To put their learning into practice, pupils measure different objects around the classroom using rulers, tape measures and weighing scales. They then used their mathematical skills to convert the measurements into different metric units accurately. This practical activity helped children understand how measurement is used in everyday life while improving their problem-solving and reasoning skills. The hands-on learning experience encouraged teamwork, confidence and a deeper understanding of metric conversion.

Welcome Back, Year 6!

Welcome back to a brand-new term! We hope you’ve had a wonderful break and are feeling refreshed and ready to learn. We are looking forward to a great term ahead, packed with exciting lessons, new challenges and lots of opportunities to show how amazing you are.

We started the term with an exciting workshop from Rhythm Studio. Pupils worked in pairs to create their own songs, showing fantastic teamwork, creativity and confidence. It was a brilliant way to begin the term!

Leighton House Visit

Year 6 had a wonderful visit to Leighton House Museum where they learnt about different cultures, traditions, and beliefs through engaging activities and discussions. The children also enjoyed practising calligraphy, carefully creating beautiful lettering using traditional techniques. After the visit, we went to Holland Park, where the pupils enjoyed spending time together and relaxing in the beautiful surroundings. It was lovely to see the children socialising, playing, and enjoying each other’s company while creating happy memories together. The visit was a valuable experience that encouraged learning, friendship, and appreciation of different cultures.

Creating Songs and Music with Rhythm Studios

In their Rhythm Studios music lessons, Year 6 pupils explored the exciting process of writing their own songs and creating music to match their ideas. They learned how to develop lyrics, think about rhythm and melody and work together to compose pieces that expressed different emotions and themes. Pupils experimented with beats, instruments and musical patterns while building confidence in performing and sharing their creative work with others. The lessons encouraged teamwork, imagination and self-expression, helping pupils develop both their musical skills and their confidence as young musicians.

DT Waistcoat Project

In Design and Technology, Year 6 pupils enjoyed designing and making their own waistcoats as part of an exciting textiles project. The children carefully planned their ideas, selected suitable materials and used a range of sewing techniques to create their final products. They showed great creativity and independence while learning how to measure, cut and assemble their designs accurately. Throughout the project, the pupils demonstrated excellent perseverance and problem-solving skills as they improved and evaluated their work. It was wonderful to see the children take pride in their finished waistcoats and celebrate their achievements.

Junior Citizenship Workshop at Craven Cottage

Year 6 pupils visited Craven Cottage to take part in an engaging Junior Citizenship workshop, where they learned valuable skills to help them stay safe and responsible in everyday life. Throughout the day, pupils explored important topics such as road safety, online safety, emergency situations and personal wellbeing through a range of interactive activities and discussions. They listened carefully to advice from professionals, asked thoughtful questions and worked together to solve different challenges with confidence and maturity. After the workshop, pupils enjoyed spending time together in the park, making the day both educational and enjoyable while creating lasting memories with their classmates.

Parents’ Visit to Year 6

Year 6 were delighted to welcome parents into the classroom for a special visit this week. The children proudly shared their learning, projects and classroom activities, giving parents a chance to see all the hard work they have been doing this term. Pupils enjoyed explaining their ideas and demonstrating the skills they have developed across different subjects. Parents were very impressed by the children’s confidence, creativity and enthusiasm for learning. It was a wonderful opportunity to strengthen the partnership between home and school while celebrating the achievements of our Year 6 pupils together.

World Book Day Reading Buddies

On World Book Day, the Year 6 children were paired with Year 2 pupils to share the joy of reading together. The older children helped the younger pupils read their favourite stories with confidence and expression. Everyone enjoyed dressing up as characters from books and talking about the stories they love the most. The Year 2 children listened carefully and were excited to read alongside their Year 6 partners. It was wonderful to see the older pupils showing kindness, patience and encouragement during the activity. The special event helped all the children develop their reading skills and celebrate the magic of books together.

Down the Rabbit Hole: Year 6 Celebrate with an Alice in Wonderland Adventure

Year 6 enjoyed a truly magical and memorable World Book Day celebration inspired by the classic tale. The children arrived at school dressed as their favourite book characters, filling the classrooms with queens, mad hatters, wizards, superheroes and many other imaginative costumes. It was wonderful to see the pupils enthusiastically sharing their favourite stories and discussing the books that inspire their love of reading.

As part of the celebration, the children visited Wonderland, where they stepped into the enchanting world of Alice in Wonderland. They took part in a range of exciting activities, explored the magical setting and fully immersed themselves in the adventure. The experience brought the story to life and gave the children a fantastic opportunity to use their imagination, creativity and curiosity. Throughout the day, there was a real sense of excitement and enthusiasm for books and storytelling. The children thoroughly enjoyed celebrating together, creating special memories with their friends while developing an even greater appreciation for reading. It was a fantastic day filled with laughter, learning and imagination, reminding everyone of the joy and wonder that books can bring.

Early Islamic Civilisation

In History, Year 6 have been learning about the Early Islamic Civilisation and exploring what everyday life was like in ancient Baghdad. During the lesson, the pupils used drama and role-play to bring the past to life by acting out scenes from markets, homes, schools and important places within the city. The children showed great enthusiasm and creativity as they explored the traditions, achievements and daily routines of people living during this period. Through drama, the pupils developed a deeper understanding of the importance of Baghdad as a centre of learning, culture and trade. It was fantastic to see the children working collaboratively while building their historical knowledge in such an engaging way.

Year 6 Visit to the Lyric Theatre

Year 6 pupils had an exciting trip to the Lyric Theatre to watch 'Jack and the Beanstalk.' The children enjoyed the fantastic acting, colourful costumes and funny moments throughout the performance. Everyone was amazed by the impressive stage effects and lively music. The trip gave pupils the opportunity to experience a live theatre production and learn more about performing arts. Pupils behaved excellently and represented the school with pride during the visit. It was a memorable day that all of Year 6 will remember for a long time.

PE Lessons Focus on Running

Pupils have been developing their fitness and teamwork skills during PE lessons with a focus on running activities. The children took part in sprint races, relay challenges, and endurance exercises to improve their speed and stamina. Pupils learnt the importance of warming up properly and using good running techniques. Everyone showed determination and encouraged their classmates throughout the lessons. The activities helped pupils build confidence while staying active and healthy. It has been wonderful to see the enthusiasm and positive attitude shown by all pupils during PE lessons.

Lawyers for Learners Workshops

For nearly four weeks, Year 6 immersed themselves in an exciting series of ‘Lawyers for Learners’ workshops, where they explored real-life case scenarios and discovered what it truly means to work within the legal system. Pupils took on the roles of defence lawyers, prosecutors, witnesses and members of a jury, experiencing firsthand how evidence is analysed and how fair decisions are reached. Each workshop challenged them to think critically, ask thoughtful questions and consider multiple viewpoints.

The sessions not only strengthened their understanding of justice, rights and responsibilities, but also helped them build confidence in public speaking, teamwork and problem-solving. By the end of the programme, pupils had gained a meaningful insight into how the law impacts everyday life—while enjoying the thrill of stepping into the shoes of real legal professionals.

PSHE Debate: Understanding the Rule of Law

In Year 6 PSHE, pupils explored the Rule of Law through a lively class debate on the question: “Should pupils be allowed to appoint their headteacher?” The children discussed the importance of fairness, responsibility and democratic processes, considering how rules help protect everyone and ensure decisions are made in the best interests of the school community. Throughout the debate, pupils listened respectfully to different viewpoints and used evidence to support their ideas, developing a deeper understanding of how laws and leadership work together to keep society running smoothly.

A Proud and Memorable Graduation Day at IntoUniversity

Graduation day at IntoUniversity was a truly special occasion, full of pride and celebration. Pupils had an amazing time at Northeastern University in London, where they presented their projects and shared their learning journeys with parents. Each pupil had the opportunity to stand confidently in front of an audience and showcase the skills and knowledge they had gained throughout the programme.

The atmosphere was filled with excitement, encouragement and  joy as families and staff applauded the students’ hard work and creativity. Exploring the university campus also gave pupils a glimpse into what future education might look like, sparking dreams and ambitions for the years ahead. It was a memorable day that celebrated not just what the pupils had achieved, but also how much they had grown in confidence, teamwork and aspiration.

Exploring Future Dreams and Ambitions

On the fourth day at IntoUniversity, the pupils explored their dreams and ambitions for the future in greater depth. They spent time thinking carefully about what they would like to study when they go to university and how those studies could help them achieve their goals. Some pupils shared dreams of becoming doctors, engineers, teachers, scientists, artists, or even business leaders. They wrote about the subjects that interested them most—such as medicine, law, art, or computer science—and explained why those fields inspired them. Each student wrote their ambitions on cards, adding drawings and motivational words to make them unique. Afterwards, they proudly shared their cards with the rest of the class, speaking about their hopes and listening to one another’s ideas. It was an inspiring and thoughtful session that encouraged everyone to dream big, work hard, and believe that with effort and determination, they can achieve their goals.

A Productive and Inspiring Day at IntoUniversity

On our third day at IntoUniversity, pupils had a productive and inspiring schedule. In their first activity, everyone took part in a range of tasks — writing, drawing, cutting and glueing, showing fantastic teamwork at its best. In the morning, they worked diligently to complete their presentations on their chosen artists, showcasing creativity, research skills and confidence as they shared their work. The afternoon brought an exciting drama workshop, where students explored expression, teamwork and performance through engaging activities. The day was a wonderful opportunity for pupils to build confidence, develop new skills and enjoy learning in a fun and supportive environment.

Animation Workshop and Creative Learning at WAC Arts and IntoUniversity

Year 6 took part in an exciting animation workshop at WAC Arts. First, the pupils created their characters using play dough, carefully shaping them and adding lots of detail to make them unique. They also spent time drawing background scenes and extra characters to include in their stories, using their imaginations to design colourful and creative settings. After that, they learnt how to bring their models to life using stop-motion animation. They worked in small groups, moving their characters a tiny bit at a time and taking photos to make it look like the figures were really moving on screen. Once the animation was complete, the pupils explored how to add sound effects and voices to match their characters’ actions, which made their films even more fun and realistic. Everyone was fully engaged, enjoyed being creative and used new skills. The pupils loved the whole experience and were very proud of the animations they produced. On their second day at IntoUniversity, they continued building their skills, taking part in even more fun activities that encouraged teamwork, creativity, and confidence.

Exploring Performing Arts at IntoUniversity

On our first day at IntoUniversity, the children took part in exciting activities all about performing arts. First, they compared different theatres from different periods in history, including Ancient Greek theatres, Roman theatres and the Globe Theatre. They also looked at modern theatres and tried to find differences and similarities between old and recent ones. After that, they worked in groups to explore the theme of performing arts further. Each group chose an artist and researched their life, achievements and contributions to the performing arts world. The children showed great teamwork, curiosity, and enthusiasm throughout the day.

NSPCC Workshop: Staying Safe and Understanding Our Rights

This week, Year 6 participated in an NSPCC workshop focused on ensuring children's safety and understanding their rights. The session enabled pupils to learn what constitutes abuse, how to recognise it and most importantly, how to speak out and stay safe. Through interactive discussions and activities, the children were encouraged to reflect on trusted adults they can approach and to understand how organisations like the NSPCC are there to provide support. The workshop was engaging, age-appropriate and instilled confidence in the pupils to seek help whenever necessary.

History Debate: Winston Churchill and Britain’s Victory in World War II

This week in History, Year 6 participated in a thoughtful and lively debate about whether Winston Churchill played the most significant role in Britain’s victory in World War II. The children explored various viewpoints, with some arguing that Churchill’s leadership and inspiring speeches were pivotal in maintaining national morale. Others suggested that victory depended equally on the bravery of soldiers, the support of the Allies and advancements in technology. The debate fostered critical thinking and enabled pupils to appreciate that historical events are influenced by a multitude of individuals and factors.

Dreams and Ambitions for the Future

In PSHE, pupils shared their dreams and ambitions for the future. They spoke about the careers and life goals they hope to achieve and discussed the steps they need to take to reach them, such as working hard, developing new skills and staying motivated. This activity helped pupils to reflect on their futures while building confidence and a sense of purpose.

Celebrating Individuality Through the Dove Workshop

As part of their wellbeing activities, the Year 6 pupils took part in a Dove workshop focused on self-esteem and body confidence. During the session, they explored the importance of valuing their individuality, challenging negative stereotypes and recognising the unique qualities that make each person special. Through thoughtful discussions and interactive activities, the pupils were encouraged to think positively about themselves, support one another and feel proud of who they are. It was a meaningful and empowering experience that helped to build confidence, kindness and self-acceptance.

Amber Class Brings World War II History to Life

Amber Class delivered a thoughtful and informative assembly all about World War II. Pupils confidently shared facts about key events, important leaders and the impact the war had on everyday life. They spoke about evacuees, rationing and the bravery shown by ordinary people during difficult times. With clear speaking, role play and well-prepared visuals, Amber Class helped the audience gain a deeper understanding of this significant period in history.

Bringing Blitz Vocabulary to Life in English

In English, Year 6 explored a range of new vocabulary linked to the Blitz as part of their World War II topic. They discussed the meanings of the words in depth, thinking about how they would have been used at the time and what emotions or images they might create. To help embed the new vocabulary, pupils worked in groups to act out each word using expression, movement and teamwork. The rest of the class watched closely and tried to guess which word was being performed. This activity not only helped them remember the vocabulary more effectively but also encouraged creativity, collaboration and confidence when speaking in front of others.

Year 6 Botanists Explore the World of Plants

Year 6 scientists stepped into the role of botanists this week, exploring and classifying a wide variety of plants. The children worked carefully to observe key features such as leaf shape, stem texture, flower structure and root systems. They compared similarities and differences between species, using scientific vocabulary and careful reasoning to group plants into categories, just like real scientists in the field. Pupils recorded their findings, discussed their ideas with partners and reflected on how classification helps us understand the natural world. The activity sparked curiosity, encouraged teamwork and gave them a deeper appreciation of plant life and biodiversity.

Year 6 Embrace the NSPCC’s “Choose Kindness” Message

Year 6 recently took part in an NSPCC workshop with the theme Choose Kindness. During the session, pupils explored how their words and actions can have a powerful impact on others. They discussed real-life scenarios, shared ideas about how to show kindness in everyday situations and reflected on how it feels to both give and receive kindness. Through thoughtful activities and guided discussions, the workshop helped pupils understand that even the smallest positive actions—like a smile, a helping hand or a kind word—can make a big difference in the classroom, at home and within the wider community. Pupils left the session inspired to be more considerate, supportive and mindful of others.

Year 6 Make a Fantastic Start to Cricket Lessons

Year 6 enjoyed their first cricket lesson this week, learning the basics of batting, bowling and fielding while working together as a team. Pupils practised holding the bat correctly, aiming their bowls with control and positioning themselves on the field to support their teammates. They showed great enthusiasm, encouraged one another and quickly improved their skills as the session went on. It was a fun and active start to their cricket lessons, with many pupils excited to keep developing their techniques in the weeks ahead.

Year 6 Begin Exploring World War I and World War II

In their first week back, Year 6 pupils began their learning about World War I and World War II, exploring the causes of both wars and the key events that shaped them. They discussed how tensions between countries escalated, looked at significant dates and leaders involved and started to understand how these global conflicts affected people’s lives. Pupils also shared what they already knew, asked thoughtful questions and showed great curiosity as they began this new historical topic.
