Welcome to Year 2!

We are so excited to begin another fantastic year in Sapphire Class, taught by Mr Galdini and supported by Miss Sheppard.

Year 2 is a really important stage in your child’s learning journey, filled with new challenges and plenty of exciting opportunities.  While English and Maths remain at the heart of our curriculum, the children also enjoy a wide range of subjects, including guided reading, science, history, geography, computing, music and PE.  A big focus this year will also be on handwriting, times tables and SPAG (spelling, punctuation and grammar).  Children will also have the chance to develop their skills through experiences such as learning instruments and taking part in PE sessions.

To support your child at home, please encourage them to practise their weekly spellings and to read regularly with you.  We use the VIPERS approach when reading, so asking questions linked to these skills can really help develop understanding.  Don’t forget to sign their reading journal each time you read together—these will be checked daily.  Times tables practice is also essential and can be supported through fun platforms such as Times Tables Rockstars (using your child’s login) and games like Hit the Button on www.topmarks.co.uk

Homework will be set Monday to Thursday.  English and Maths will be given at the start of the week, and Thursday’s homework will focus on Topic work—helping to consolidate learning in subjects such as History, Geography and Science. Weekends are a great time to practise number fluency (KIRFs) and enjoy reading for pleasure.
