Learn Together, Enjoy Together, Achieve Together

EYFS Enquiry based writing

At Addison, we start young children off with mark making where they work on hand-eye coordination and finger strength to prepare them for later writing. In EYFS, we provide meaningful opportunities for children to learn about the written word and to support them to understand that symbols carry meaning.

We use strands of the Development Matters framework to aid our text choices. For example, as children learn about people who help us, they learn about dentists and police officers. We therefore read 'Where the sugar bugs live' and 'Zog and the flying doctor' to bring their learning to life.

Language development links closely to listening and understanding. Introducing children to a wide range of words they would rarely hear or use increases their knowledge of vocabulary and concepts to help them understand the world around them. For example, we expose children to new vocabulary in 'Hairy Maclary's Rumpus at the Vets' where children learn vocabulary like 'doses', 'aches' and 'twitches'.
