Maths in Early Years and Foundation Stage (EYFS)

Maths teaching in EYFS uses the White Rose scheme of Learning which is divided in to ten phases. These provide a variety of opportunities to develop the understanding of number, shape, measure and spatial thinking. Teaching is supported through the use of ‘Master the Curriculum’ resources and ‘Number Blocks’ which use engaging storylines to support early mathematical understanding of number. There is allocated time for daily adult-led short focused inputs which can be either whole-class or in groups.

Through continuous provision, children are encouraged to explore mathematical concepts through play or adult-led activities, inside and outside the classroom.

At Addison, we believe that educational learning should be fun, engaging and playful. The White Rose scheme of learning begins with Reception, so in Nursery, we prepare children for more formal teaching of number in Reception, through the use of ‘Master the Curriculum’ resources. These ensure consistency throughout the school as they use the same mathematical language and concrete and pictorial resources as White Rose. Moreover, the resources also link to the new Development Matters framework.  The learning materials engage children in maths and get them excited about learning with fun visual imagery, creative contexts and imaginative maths problems. Lots of opportunities are given to sing songs, watch short animations which introduce numbers and count a variety of objects.
